Under the bright lights at Claremore High School, freshman guard Alayna Eberley has quickly become a steady presence for the Lady Zebras varsity team, pairing composure with a deep love for the game.
What Eberley values most about Claremore basketball is not just the wins, but the bonds built along the way. “What I love most about my team at Claremore is the friendships I have made,” she said. “I also love how passionate we are about winning.” That mix of chemistry and competitiveness helped fuel tournament success this season and made a fast adjustment to the varsity level a little easier.
Eberley, who plays both point guard and shooting guard, has embraced a new role off the ball. “I have played mostly shooting guard this season, which has been a big adjustment,” she said. “I was used to only playing point guard and having the ball in my hands at all times. The toughest thing about playing shooting guard is getting open and creating my own shots.”
Her work ethic extends beyond the high school season. In her free time, Eberley said she enjoys extra practices and games with her AAU team, OKswish, as well as additional trainings to keep improving. In the classroom, she lists biology as her favorite subject and credits teachers such as Ms. Sanders, Ms. Nicks, Mrs. Hughes and Ms. Taylor for making a positive impact.
Family remains at the center of her motivation. “My mom inspires me more than anyone,” Eberley said. “She pushes me to be the best me I can be and sacrifices so much for me. I would not be where I am today without her.” She also knows her little brother is watching every step. “Athletics has taught me a lot in life, but one of the biggest things is that someone is always looking up to you,” she said. “Mine is my little brother. He really looks up to me and he is always my biggest supporter. I want to do nothing but make him proud.”
From winning the Vinita tournament to earning a starting spot as a freshman, Eberley said this season has been special and has strengthened her desire to leave a lasting mark on Claremore basketball.
