Verdigris’ Adelaide Patterson – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Red Crown Credit Union

Most freshmen playing varsity basketball would be intimidating stepping onto the court or competing in practice. For Adelaide Patterson, it’s where she thrives.

“Seeing a packed stadium and playing in front of all of them. I play better under pressure,” Patterson said.

The Verdigris High School freshman has already made her mark on the Cardinals’ basketball program, playing shooting guard and point guard for the varsity squad. But basketball isn’t her only sport — Patterson also plays forward on the school’s varsity soccer team, demonstrating her versatility as a two-sport athlete.

Patterson’s competitive drive was forged early. Her proudest accomplishment came in seventh grade when she helped capture the Verdigris Valley Conference Championship against Locust Grove.

“Winning the Verdigris Valley Conference Championship in 7th grade against Locust Grove is an accomplishment I’m most proud of,” Patterson said.

Beyond the statistics and wins, basketball has taught Patterson lessons that extend far beyond the court.

“Basketball has taught me how to be dedicated to something. For instance, in life there are going to be things you don’t want do. But dedication will get you through it,” she said.

That dedication is fueled by those around her. Patterson credits her teammates as a constant source of motivation and improvement.

“My teammates inspire me. They push me to always do and be better,” Patterson said.

She also looks to professional athletes for inspiration, particularly Iowa star Caitlin Clark.

“I look up to Caitlin Clark. She’s one of the best shooters in women’s basketball and has a great attitude,” Patterson said.

Patterson’s support system extends beyond the gym. She remembers Mrs. Reid, her sixth-grade teacher, as someone who challenged her to reach her full potential.

As she continues her freshman season, Patterson remains grateful for the foundation that has carried her this far.

“I want to say thank you to my family for always being there to support me. My friends are a big part of where I am today too. I appreciate how they have stood by me,” she said.
