Verdigris cheerleader Jodyn Lederman spoke to VYPE in a recent interview stating “My sport has taught me leadership skills and how to be confident. When I first started cheer I was very shy and quiet. Cheer has helped me come out of my shell and has given me confidence. Since I’ve gained confidence I’ve also gained leadership skills over the years, and since this is my senior year I feel like it’s my responsibility to lead the team”.
Lederman began her cheerleading career with the encouragement of Averee Bressie – the teammate she says has influenced her the most. Lederman shared “when I first tried out for cheer in Junior high, it was my first year ever cheering. Averee has taught me everything I know about cheer, and she was by my side up until last year when she graduated”. As she completes her senior year lederman is preparing to “ start college, and making the cheer team in college. I’ve already been accepted and I’m looking forward to starting this next big step in my life”.
Currently, Lederman is “taking Teacher Prep at Northeast Tech, and in a few weeks I start my teaching internship at the elementary school”. Her mother has really inspired her, especially through an important piece of advice. “My mom always tells me to walk in grace and forgiveness. As long as my heart is right that’s all that matters” said Lederman. Which is why She has also accompanied her youth group to Night Light explaining that “Night Light is where homeless people can go to get clothes, shoes, other necessities, and food”.
Before completing her interview she took a moment to say “Thank you to my first coach Amy who helped me blossom as a cheerleader. Thank you to my current coaches Gina and Stephanie who have also helped me grow and improve as a leader and as a person. Thank you to my family who has supported me all throughout highschool and showed up to my games. I would not have made it this far without any of them and I’m very grateful to be so loved by them”.
