Claremore’s Libbie Jones – Athlete Spotlight

Senior varsity tennis player Libbie Jones has spent four years wearing Claremore High School’s red and white, but she measures her career in more than wins and losses. The Lady Zebras standout talks about memories, role models and the mindset that keeps her calm when matches get tight.

Jones points to a moment from her sophomore year as the achievement that still means the most. “I am most proud of getting first place at a varsity tournament with my doubles partner, Ari, during my sophomore year,” she said. “Competing at the varsity level was challenging, and winning together made the accomplishment even more special.”

That title run helped shape how she sees the sport. Tennis, she said, has taught her “patience and persistence” during long, mentally demanding matches. “I’ve learned to stay calm, keep working, and not give up even when I’m behind,” Jones said.

Her approach goes back to lessons at home. Jones said her dad has always inspired her and showed her “that if you really want something, you have to work hard for it.” His example, she added, taught her dedication and responsibility and pushed her to set goals and stay committed.

She also leans on friends and teachers on campus. Jones said her friend Stacy “has always been there for me, both on and off the court” and isn’t afraid to be honest with her. That honesty, Jones said, “has helped me grow as both a player and a person.”

In the classroom, she credits Zoology teacher Mrs. Golbek for making a lasting impact. “She was more than just a teacher—she truly cared about her students,” Jones said, adding that Golbek listened and adjusted her teaching style to help students succeed.

Representing Claremore, Jones said, comes with a strong sense of community. “No matter if we’re winning or losing, there are always people in our corner supporting us,” she said. “It feels like we’re representing something meaningful together.”

She carries one piece of advice from a former soccer coach into every match: “No matter if you’re losing or winning, the score is always 0-0.” Jones said that reminder keeps her focused and prevents her from getting too comfortable or discouraged.Jones looks up to college basketball star Paige Bueckers for her talent, work ethic and resilience through injuries. “Her determination and leadership inspire me to stay focused and push through obstacles in my own sport,” Jones said.
