Verdigris Cardinals 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Red Crown Credit Union

VERDIGRIS CARDINALS

Coach: TRAVIS EAST

12-2

OFFENSE

The Cardinals have made deep playoff runs a custom as of late. In the last five years, they have made three trips to the semifinals and one trip to the quarterfinals. This season looks to be no different as they are ready to play late into December. The offense returns a couple of playmakers that will help carry the load. Wide receiver Tyler Willis (5-9, 180, Sr.) had 237 receiving yards with two touchdown receptions and 137 rushing yards with one touchdown. At running back, Ty McKnight (6-1, 180, Jr.) registered 150 yards with two scores. Both players will look to increase their production and impact this season. Joining Willis as targets on the outside are Cole Finch (6-0, 170, Sr.) and Skyler Yoder (6-0, 180, Sr.). Ryan Wells (5-10, 250, Sr.) and Junior Olmos (5-8, 240, Sr.) will both work to keep disruptions from their opponents to a minimum.

DEFENSE

The Cardinal defense brings back a lot of experience to the secondary. Willis ended last season with 50 tackles and three interceptions, while Finch tallied 50 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one interception. Also in the mix was Yoder, who had 38 tackles and broke up seven passes. Playing at linebacker, McKnight will work to keep the opponent’s big plays down. He had 32 tackles and four tackles for loss last season and looks to increase those numbers this season. Wreaking havoc in the trenches will be Grant Hastings (5-10, 215, Jr.) and Wells. Assistant coaches on East’s staff this year are Zach Gray, Bobby Jones, Ron Fuller, Jeremy Gray, Jake Everett, Mike Roller, Heath Abercrombie, and Blake Hougland.
