Verdigris’ Kate Wiginton Athlete Spotlight Presented by Red Crown Verdigris

Kate Wiginton

Verdigris High School

Entering her junior year at Verdigris High School, Kate Wiginton is a shooting guard on the varsity basketball team. Wiginton loves being part of this team and representing her school.

“There are so many reasons that I love being a student-athlete at Verdigris, but what I love the most is that we all take a lot or pride in our school, our teams and we support each other. I am proud to be a Verdigris Cardinal,” said Wiginton.

A shooting guard who can play point guard if needed, Wiginton said the team is coming together and working hard to make this a great season on the court.

“I am so thankful for my teammates. They all work hard, and we push each other to get better. And we try to be super encouraging of each other,” said Wiginton. “Our team motto is Pride, Passion, and Purpose – with that in mind we strive to get better every time out. We really want to win our home tournament, The Mother Road Classic, and get back to the state tournament. Personally, I have been working hard in the off season to grow and be able to contribute more offensively and defensively this year. With Morgan graduating, the team dynamic has changed and several of us are going to have to step up in new ways.”

The team is facing some challenges this season, but Wiginton is confident they have the players to overcome them and put Verdigris basketball in a position to be successful.

“We are facing a lot of change this season. Morgan, our team leader, graduated last year and we’ve spent the scrimmage season really working to figure out our new identity. Things are really starting to come together for us, and I am excited to get the season started and compete with my teammates. We have some great veterans on this team. Our seniors will be a huge part of our success this year. I think Brynlee Brown and Maddie Daniels will continue to be leaders for us as we head into the regular season. And I really think Jackie Beauchamp, one of our freshmen, will make a big impact for us,” said Wiginton.

Aside from basketball, Wiginton is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Leadership. Wiginton works just as hard in the classroom.

“My favorite subject in school is English. I love to read and enjoy writing. Mrs. Sparks, my English teacher, is my favorite teacher. She’s great because she is super fun in class, and it seems like she really cares about us and what is going on in our lives. She also teaches Leadership and is pushing us to serve others as we lead,” said Wiginton.

Plans after graduation include playing basketball and pursuing a degree in business.

“I eventually would love to open my own bakery,” said Wiginton.

As for free time?

“A lot of my free time I’m in the gym but when I’m not working out, I love to read, bake and spend time with my friends and family.”
