Mason Weeks has built his junior year at Sequoyah Claremore High School around one principle: versatility.
The Eagles’ three-sport athlete divides his time between the soccer pitch, football field and basketball court, excelling as a center midfielder, wide receiver/cornerback and point guard respectively. But it’s on the soccer field where Weeks orchestrates play from the middle, demonstrating the leadership skills he’s developed across all three sports.
“Leadership and teamwork,” Weeks said when asked what athletics has taught him.
That philosophy shows in his approach to representing Sequoyah.
“Getting recognition from people I looked up to gives me great satisfaction,” Weeks said. “Being able to do it with Sequoyah on my chest makes it that much better. Our school colors are nice too.”
While Weeks competes in soccer during the spring, his most memorable athletic achievement came on the gridiron last fall. He broke the school record for receiving yards in a single game, showcasing the explosive speed and hands that make him dangerous in multiple sports.
The junior credits different influences for shaping his athletic journey. Basketball teammate Gabe Paura left a lasting impression, with Weeks noting his shooting guard “showed me how iron sharpens iron.” He models his game after NBA star Kawhi Leonard, admiring the defensive commitment that sets elite players apart.
“He knows his role, even though he might be the best player on his team it doesn’t stop him from playing lazy defense,” Weeks said. “It encourages him to be one of the best defenders in the league.”
Beyond athletics, Weeks draws inspiration from his mother’s faith and values the practical wisdom of Coach Holt, whom he credits for “great common sense.”
As Weeks continues his junior campaign, he carries advice that fuels his competitive fire: “The willingness to succeed should be as strong as a hurricane, so that you can be in the best position to put yourself in succession.”
For the multi-talented Eagle, success means maximizing every opportunity — whether distributing passes in midfield, catching touchdowns or running the offense.
