A varsity volleyball player for the Lady Cardinals, Sanchez fills two important roles as a setter and defensive specialist. Both positions require quick reactions, consistency and strong communication, especially when a play does not begin perfectly.
“I play both setter and defensive specialist. The most challenging part of setting is taking a difficult pass and turning it into a better, hittable ball. As a defensive specialist, the biggest challenge is communicating effectively and making sure my teammates and I are always on the same page.”
Sanchez has competed in volleyball since seventh grade, gaining experience in both indoor and beach volleyball. Her hustle and serving are strengths she brings to the court, while she continues working to sharpen her ball control and create better opportunities for teammates.
“The strengths of my game are my hustle and serving. I work hard to pursue every ball and never give up on a play. I’m continuing to improve my ball control so I can turn difficult touches into better opportunities for the next player.”
Her perspective on the sport deepened last season, when an ACL and meniscus tear kept her from playing. Time spent watching from the sideline reinforced how much every opportunity matters.
“Last year, I was unable to play because of an ACL/meniscus tear. Watching entire games from the sidelines gave me a different perspective and taught me a lot. Most importantly, I learned that you never truly know what you have until it is taken away. That experience has made me appreciate every opportunity I have to step onto the court, and it motivates me to play even harder than I did before.”
The senior said she finds inspiration in a former coach.
“One person who inspires me is my former club coach, Yamiq Bennett (Coach B), who is now the head coach at Metro Christian. During my last club season, she made a lasting impact on me as both a player and a person. Even after a loss, she remained positive and always had the biggest smile on her face. She is truly a light to everyone around her. She taught me that even when things aren’t going my way, I can persevere, stay positive, and never give up.”
Sanchez also aims to provide the same welcoming presence that former teammate Sierra Wolfe showed her. After graduation, she plans to attend college and pursue a degree in meteorology.
