Danette Floyd took a slightly different path to finding her career in education. While in college, Floyd made the decision to become a Business Management major and spent 10 years working in the corporate world.
“I got certified as a Secondary Business/Vocational Marketing. My career path has taken me to education, out of education and back to education,” Floyd said. “This is my third year at Sequoyah High School.”
Now the ICAP Coordinator, which is similar to a career counselor, Floyd takes care of the high school library as well.
“I have the best job in education! By the time students get to the HS many do not care to read a book. We started a Book Club last year and it has been a success! We have it during 1st and 2nd lunch,” Floyd said. “ICAP (Individual Career & Academic Plan) is a graduation requirement in Oklahoma. I work with 9th-12th grade every year on the ICAP requirements, which are three assessments (Career Interest, Skills Confidence, and Work Values), Goal Setting and Education Plan. After setting goals for after high school I help students make a plan to achieve it. We also talk about barriers that may keep them from their plan and of course, we talk about if Plan A doesn’t work…what about Plan B, C, D, E and F. I love helping students reach for the stars and their full potential.”
Floyd found inspiration in her grandmother who was a high school teacher in Adair for over 30 years.
“She taught Math and English. Over the years so many of her past students would always tell me how kind she was, how smart she was, how patient she was and what a great teacher she was. I would like to think I show my students those same qualities,” said Floyd.
Floyd said she loves her work and the ever-changing landscape that is education.
“Teaching is never the same thing from day to day, you are always moving and always growing. I always hope to bring my students along with me and teach them the love of lifelong learning!”
