Verdigris High School junior Erin Gray has built a reputation as a speedy left forward who thrives on connection, both on and off the field, for the Lady Cardinals varsity soccer team. Balancing varsity soccer and softball, she embraces a busy schedule that keeps her deeply rooted in her school and community.
Gray said the bond with her teammates is what makes soccer special. “What I love most about my teammates and team is how we are all so close,” she said. “We all get along and generally just have the most fun with each other.” That chemistry carries onto the field, where she leans on vocal leaders like teammate Averie Deegan and the humor of Maren Meador to keep the energy high.
On the pitch, Gray’s role at left forward demands constant focus. “The hardest thing about this is just how aware you have to be of everything like where your teammates are positioned, how far your defender is, and even how much space you have before you’re out of bounds,” she said. She points to her speed as a key strength that helps stretch defenses and create chances for Verdigris. “I think my strength would be my speed and how that helps out on the field,” Gray said. “Something I’m always trying to get better at is my accuracy with my left foot especially playing on the left side.”
Gray said representing Verdigris means honoring those who played before her. “What makes representing Verdigris so special to me is knowing how great the people before me, like the alumni, are and just trying to carry on their legacy,” she said. In the classroom, her favorite subject is English, and she credits teacher Mrs. Cegielski for making it stand out.
Along with soccer and softball, Gray serves on the Verdigris High School Student Council and fills her limited free time driving around, going for walks and runs, reading and being with those she cares about most. She said her mom is her biggest inspiration, calling her a hard-working role model who would do anything for her. From sports to school activities, Gray said she will carry forward lessons in punctuality and working well with others long after her time in a Lady Cardinals uniform.
