Verdigris High School senior Kate Sperling embraces the responsibility that comes with being a leader for the Lady Cardinals varsity cheer squad. A captain and base, Sperling helps set the tone for a group she says is connected by its work ethic and commitment to one another.
“One thing I love most about my team is that we are all willing to put in hard work to reach our goals. Each of my teammates have a passion for cheer and are all valuable to the team,” Sperling said.
As a base, Sperling appreciates the trust required to execute stunts successfully. Every member of a stunt group has an important role, and that shared responsibility has become one of her favorite parts of cheering.
“On my team, I am a captain and a base. As a captain, I am responsible for setting a positive tone, being an encouragement, and always pushing my teammates to do their best. I love being a base because of the bond that is formed with the rest of the stunt group. Each member has a part to play in making the stunt hit and we all have to trust each other to do our parts,” Sperling said.
Sperling is especially looking forward to the excitement surrounding Friday night football and the squad’s competitive opportunities at Gameday Regionals.
“I am most excited about football season. The energy and atmosphere of Friday nights make it the most special part of the season. I am also excited about Gameday Regionals. I love working hard with my team on a routine and competing,” Sperling said.
Away from cheer, Sperling serves as president of Verdigris’ student council and is a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in elementary education after graduation.
“Working with kids is my passion, whether in a gym or a classroom,” Sperling said.
